The Ritter House (also Jirah Luce House ) is a historic building in Vineyard Haven on Martha's Vineyard Island in the state of Massachusetts in the United States . It is one of the last remaining Federal-style homes in the city and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1977.
history
The building was one of the few to survive a devastating fire that ravaged Vineyard Haven in 1883. Over the years, it served at times as a residential building, apartment building, shop and as an office building for the local school authority. In 1976 the Martha's Vineyard Historical Preservation Society acquired the house, which from 1981 rented it to the newly established Tisbury Museum, which was dedicated to preserving the history of Vineyard Haven. In 1988 the Tisbury Museum merged with the Dukes County Historical Society, which bought the Ritter House that same year and worked out plans for its restoration together with the architecture firm Ann Beha Associates. This was completed with financial support from the Massachusetts Historical Commission.
