from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Roßbrücke is a road bridge in the city center of the Thuringian state capital Erfurt and is one of the oldest preserved natural stone bridges in the city. It is located on Herrmannsplatz , spans the Walkstrom, a branch of the Gera , and serves the development traffic of the western city center.

Rossbrücke

It is believed that in the Middle Ages the first bridge at this point served as a connection between the Mainz court, seat of the Archbishop of Mainz in Erfurt, and the city. The name of the building comes from the neighboring Roßmarkt , as Hermannsplatz was called until 1876. The Roßmarkt itself is traced back to a horse pasture of the Mainzer Hof between the Geraarmen Walkstrom and Bergstrom, where horses were also traded.

A two-span stone arch bridge on Roßmarkt can be found for the first time in the mid-17th century in Johann Moritz Dedekind's city map. The current construction is estimated to be in 1750.

The 21.2 m long bridge was built from sandstone masonry. It consists of two circular arcs with clear widths of 6.50 m and 6.95 m with radii of 4.8 m and an arc of 1.29 m and 1.31 m respectively. The arch width is 8.7 m, the crowns are 40 cm and the fighters are 80 cm thick. The central pillar is 1.65 m wide.

The repair of the bridge in 1994 and 1995 was carried out according to contemporary representations from the 18th century. In addition, the structure was widened by 1.65 m, the costs amounted to 1.1 million DM. Since then, the Roßbrücke can be loaded with a 30 t truck.
