The Robbery Beaches ( English for robbery beaches ) are beaches in the west of Livingston Island in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . They are located on the north side of the Byers Peninsula and border Barclay Bay including the sub-bays Baba Tonka Cove and Kukuzel Cove .
Its name goes back to the British navigator James Weddell between 1820 and 1823. It is named after the robbery of seal skins carried out by the US brig Charity of New York under Captain Charles H. Barnard (1781-1840) in January 1821 in the wake of fierce competition among British seal hunters .
