The Byers Peninsula is a mainly unrefined peninsula that represents the western end of Livingston Island in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . It separates Barclay Bay from New Plymouth Bay .
The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 1958 after James Byers, a US ship owner who had tried unsuccessfully to persuade the US government to annex the South Shetland Islands in 1820 . Byers' sealer fleet operated there between 1820 and 1821.
