Robert Augustus Chesebrough ( January 9, 1837 - September 8, 1933 ) was a British-born American chemist who invented petroleum jelly, known under the brand name Vaseline .

He began his career in Brooklyn, New York with the distillation of petroleum from the oil of sperm whales . The discovery of petroleum in Titusville, Pennsylvania made his job obsolete. He went to Titusville around 1859 to research new materials from fuel.

In 1870 he opened his first factory in Brooklyn.

In 1875 he founded the Chesebrough Manufacturing Company , of which he was president until 1909. They started producing petroleum. On June 4, 1872, he was granted his first patent on Vaseline. From 1881 they concentrated the production on petroleum jelly. He retired from his post as President of the Society in 1908. He is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery .
