Robert Delbourgo (born November 11, 1940 ) is an Australian theoretical physicist.

Delbourgo studied at Imperial College London with a bachelor's degree in 1960 and a doctorate with Abdus Salam in 1963. As a post-doctoral student he was at the University of Wisconsin until 1964 and at the International Center for Theoretical Physics in Trieste in 1964/65 , where he followed Salam . In 1966 he became a lecturer and in 1972 a reader at Imperial College and from 1976 until his retirement in 2001 he was a professor at the University of Tasmania .

In 1988 he received the Walter Boas Medal from the Australian Institute of Physics. He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Sciences and received its Lyle Medal in 1989. In 1976 he received an honorary doctorate (D.Sc.) from the University of London. In 2002 he received the Harrie Massey Medal.

He was a close collaborator of Abdus Salam, with whom he published around 30 papers. In the 1960s he dealt with Salam with a relativistic generalization of U (6) (containing spin and SU (3)) as a symmetry group for fundamental particles that are subject to the strong interaction. Delbourgo, Salam and Strathdee showed that for a relativistic theory about SU (6) one has to go to U (6) x U (6) or U (6,6).
