Matthias Adolph von Inden ( Mathis Indenius ; * around 1565 in Düren ; † 1626 or 1627 in Jülich ) was Professor of Law and Rector of the Altdorf Academy , Jülich-Bergischer Council and Mayor of Jülich.

Life

Matthias von Inden was a son of the lay judge and mayor (1571) of Düren Thomas von Inden (* around 1530; † 1608) and his wife Cordula Harper (= Codonaeus). The Mayor of Aachen Peter III. von Inden (1458–1539), 1512 participant in the Reichstag in Trier and Cologne, was his great-grandfather. The noble patrician family named themselves after the Hof Inden located between Düren and Jülich .

Studies and university professor in Altdorf

"Matthias ab Inden, Marcoduranus" enrolled at the Academy of the Imperial City of Nuremberg in Altdorf in late summer 1585 under the rectorate of Edo Hildericus . 1586 he became a licentiate in law. Two series of disputation theses have been preserved, which he defended in 1586 and 1588 under the chairmanship of Obertus Giphanius .

In May 1588 he was appointed associate professor of law at the suggestion of Giphanius and gave lectures in Altdorf. During the “ Hundstag vacation” ( ferias caniculares ) in 1589, “Mathias Indenius Marcoduranus” enrolled at the University of Basel with the approval of the scholars of the Altdorf Academy in order to acquire the doctoral degree that could not be awarded by the Semi-Universitas Altdorf. On August 7, 1589, in Basel , he defended theses about the cancellation of the sale ( de rescindenda venditione ). The Basel Professor of Law Johannes Gut (1555–1629) from Ötlingen invited Matthias Indenius from Düren, Johann Georg Flosculus (Blumlin) (1565–1609) from Worms and Johann Robert Tuschelin ( 1564–1628) from Zweibrücken. On November 16, 1589, the Scholarchen Matthias von Inden confirmed his appointment to a full Altdorf professorship.

As a professor of the institutions , Indenius led disputations in 1590 by Johann Rudolph Wickh († 1635) from Ulm, Heinrich Reiser (1566–1629) from Lübeck (May 4), Cosmas Vakius († 1619) from Flensburg (May 30) and Jakob Killinger (1571–1646) from Dinkelsbühl (June 28). As one of the first law professors in Germany, he read about commercial law , maritime law and mercantile law . On June 29, 1590 Matthias Indenius was elected rector for the academic year 1590/91 in the sacristy of the St. Laurentius town church as successor to Edo Hildericus. However, he was dissatisfied with his grade ( salarium can live), from which he did not have in the last two years, and returned from a holiday in his homeland, which he took shortly thereafter, not to Altdorf. The prorector Hildericus represented him for the longest time of his rectorate in accordance with the Academy statutes .

Jülich-Bergischer Rat in Jülich

On July 26, 1590, Matthias von Inden wrote a letter to his colleagues in Altdorf in Düren, in which he justified his hasty departure, which did not correspond to his wishes, but to the wishes of his parents and relatives, and declared his resignation. He entered the service of Duke Wilhelm V of Jülich-Kleve-Berg (1516–1592). His marriage speech with Katharina von der Kuylen was dated August 6, 1590.

Matthias von Inden was Jülich-Bergischer Hofrat at the main and criminal court Jülich and officiated 1599-1601 as mayor of Jülich. For many years he was a deputy of the city of Jülich in the state parliaments of the duchy. Although he had studied at Protestant universities, he turned - following the denominational development in Jülich-Kleve-Berg - to "Catholic custom". He officiated as the syndic of the Vogelsang Charterhouse near Jülich.

At the Jülich-Bergische Landtag in September 1608, the two chivalrous curiae and the Bergischen cities complained about the illegal composition of the main court Jülich. All of the councilors appointed there are related to one another, are related to one another and are related by marriage. Matthias von Inden was a brother-in-law of the Jülich-Bergisch Vice Chancellor Bernhard zum Putz (Pütz) († 1626/28). The first mother-in-law of the council Petrus Simonius called Ritz (1562–1622), born Katharina Harper (= Codonaeus) from Düren, was his great-aunt. Von Inden's wife Katharina von der Kaulen was also related to Simonius. The mayor of Jülich Adam Codonaeus (1569-1636) was a brother of her late first husband Heinrich Codonaeus († 1588). Adam Codonaeus cited as evidence of his alleged non-partisanship that he was currently conducting a legal dispute against Matthias von Inden in front of the princely law firm.

The law student Hermann Tehdering (* around 1599; † 1658) from Danzig mentioned the former Altdorf professor Indenius in 1618 in a letter to Nicolaus Rittershausen (1597–1670), a son of Konrad Rittershausen , and asked for any duplicates of his publications.

family

Matthias von Inden married Katharina von der Kaulen (Kuillen) († after 1608), the widow of Jülich Advocate General Heinrich Codonaeus († 1588), daughter of Paul von der Kuylen, Keller zu Kaster , and Sybilla von Hösen (Huesen) in 1590. The son Johann von Inden (1593–1676), Referendarius, Palatinate-Neuburg Council and Vogt zu Randerath , was mayor and lay judge of the main court in Jülich. In 1619 he married Elisabeth Furdt called Brewer, daughter of Wilhelm Furdt called Brewer († 1623) from Jülich and Anna Borcken († 1637), and received the Daler Hoff in Gerderhahn ( Gierderadter Haen ) as a wedding gift from his father . Her children (grandchildren of Matthias von Inden) were:

  1. Johann von Inden († 1655), ⚭ Anna Sibylla vom Putz (she ⚭ II. After 1662 Bernhard Diederich Proff († 1687), Vogt of Geilenkirchen and Jülich),
  2. Anna Catherine von Inden († 1683), ⚭ I. 1646 Johann Albert von Schrick (1611–1646), aldermen of Aachen and Burtscheid, ⚭ II. 1651 Adam von Wiedenfeld († 1668), senior magistrate from the Count of Schwarzenberg in Neustadt and Gimborn . The Mayor of Aachen (1695/96 and 1697/98) Johann Albrecht Schrick (1646–1702) was her son from her first marriage.

In his second marriage, Matthias von Inden married Agnes Scheiffart von Merode († around 1641), a natural daughter of Johann IX. Scheiffarts from Merode († 1590) to Hemmersbach and Limbricht . Both sons were the Cologne councilor Lic. Mathias von Inden († 1673), married to Anna Honthum (Hontheimbs) († after 1677).

Matthias' von Inden's brother Wilhelm von Inden married Cordula Vorst (Forst). The brother Werner I. von Inden (* around 1567, † 1644) married I. Margarethe von Nörvenich, II. 1597 Anna Forst, III. 1639 Clara Stürz († 1679); he was mayor of Düren (1609, 1628). The sister Cordula von Inden (* around 1560, † 1618) married Hermann Trostorff, Mayor of Düren (1585), and Johann zum Pütz (1571–1646), Mayor of Düren (1606), Johann zum Pütz (1571–1646) , 1617), 1636 imperial nobility, son of the Düren council and mayor (1575, 1583, 1610) Siger (Sigismund) zum Pütz and Sophie Lautenboich. The sister Agnes von Inden (* around 1565, † 1646) had been married to the mayor (1604) and aldermen of Düren Niklas Lehm († around 1617/18) since 1586.

Matthias von Inden's nephews - Werner von Inden's sons - were Werner II von Inden (* around 1610; † 1661), Mayor of Düren (1647, 1653), Father Adam von Inden (1613–1666), professor of grammar and superior of the Jülich Jesuit branch, 1658 rector of the Jesuit college in Koblenz, and probably Thomas Inden (* around 1597, † 1630), prior of the Maria Laach Abbey from 1622 until after 1625 .
