Robert Dodd (* 1748 in Wapping , † February 1815 in London ) was a British marine painter .

life and work

In his paintings , Dodd mainly illustrated the exploits of the British fleet and the fate of individual ships in battle with the elements. His most famous representations include:

  • Shipwreck of the warship Centaur
  • Captain Inglefield with his companions in a boat
  • Sinking of the fleet of Jamaica in a storm 1782 , 4 images
  • Battle of the frigate St. Margaret and the French Amazon (1785)

In May 1795 he painted a painting, The English fleet at Spithead fleeing from the burning English ship of the line The Boyle , which is 30 m wide, also called The nautic camp . His portrayal of the mutiny on the Bounty , on which he depicted the abandonment of Captain William Bligh and his comrades, is also famous .

Dodd exhibited his works in 1780 in the Society of Artists and between 1782 and 1809 in the Royal Academy in London.

Dodd was also a successful engraver who produced engravings based on his own models. Others were made by Robert Pollard , mostly in aquatint style. Some of his works have been confused with those of his lesser known brother Ralph Dodd.

Dodd died in 1815 and was buried on February 20, 1815.
