Robert Graham Irwin

Robert Graham Irwin (born August 23, 1946 ) is a British historian , author and a connoisseur of Arabic literature.

Life

Irwin studied Modern History at Oxford University and received his PhD from the School of Oriental and African Studies in London . From 1972 he taught at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland . Since 1977 he has devoted himself almost exclusively to writing. In addition to books on historical subjects, Irwin has also written novels and published fantasy stories . His book The Arabian Nightmare was inspired by the work The Handwriting of Saragossa by Jan Potocki . In his History of Oriental Studies For Lust of Knowing , Irwin takes a very critical look at Edward Said's work Orientalism , which he not only accuses of numerous factual errors, but also of a misleading construction of the European history of science and ideas.

Today (2013) Irwin is a researcher with the School of Oriental and African Studies and editor for the Middle East at The Times Literary Supplement .
