Robert L. Burgess
Robert Lewis Burgess (* 1931 ) is an American sociologist and criminologist .
Burgess received his Ph.D. from Washington University in St. Louis in 1968. PhD. He is Professor Emeritus at Pennsylvania State University .
His most important contribution to textbook criminology is the theory of differential reinforcement , developed together with Ronald L. Akers , a pre-form of the theory of social learning , which is a supplement to the criminological learning theory of Edwin H. Sutherland . According to Burgess / Akers, the positive or negative reinforcement depends on the situation. For example, a prison sentence does not have to be stigmatizing, it can also lead to an improvement in status in a subcultural group.
In addition, Burgess has dealt with sociological and social-psychological family research.
