Robert Rautenbach (born June 23, 1931 in Wuppertal ; † September 19, 2000 in Vaals ) was a German engineer and professor of process engineering at RWTH Aachen University .

After studying process engineering with a subsequent doctorate ( The flow behavior of plastics in the roll gap, examined using the example of polyethylene ) at RWTH Aachen University in 1962, Rautenbach was a research assistant at the University of Rochester until 1963 . He then worked as a project engineer at Chemische Werke Hüls AG , where he worked in the field of process development and plant planning. From 1967 he was head of the Institute for Process Engineering at RWTH Aachen University. He held this position until 1996. Rautenbach was Vice Rector of the RWTH from 1970 to 1971, and Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering from 1978 to 1979 . In 1995 he received the Willy Hager Medal .

Rautenbach's research focused on membrane processes, in particular for desalination of seawater. In addition to lectures on this topic, Rautenbach also taught the subjects of chemical and mechanical process engineering and plant planning.
