Roccaporena is a district of Cascia in the province of Perugia , Umbria region in Italy .

geography

The place is about four kilometers west of the capital Cascia and about 65 kilometers southeast of the provincial and regional capital Perugia at 707 m and has about 70 inhabitants. Roccaporena is located just southwest of the Monte Rucino mountain (1033 m). The Torrente Corno flows southeast of the village towards Cascia.

history

In 1080 the monks of Farfa Monastery divided their area into eleven cells or monastic communities. The fourth of these communities became Roccaporena. At this time the Benedictine monastery of San Montano and its church was built. The only access road (to and from Cascia) was built shortly after the end of the Second World War .

Attractions

  • Chiesa di San Montano , church from the 12th century in the Archdiocese of Spoleto-Norcia . In this church, Santa Rita married her husband Paolo, who also found his final rest here with his two children Giangiacomo Antonio and Paolo Maria. The tombs of the saint's parents are also here. In the church there are two frescoes from the 17th century, a Madonna con Bambino (right wall) and an Incoronazione della Vergine (left wall).
  • Santuario di Santa Rita , sanctuary consecrated in 1948 . Created by the architect Oreste Della Piana from Turin. The statue in the forecourt was created in 1968 by Venanzo Crocetti from Rome. Contains the mantle of the saint as a relic. The mosaic in the apse was created in 1967 by Righini-Politi and shows Crocifisso, l'Addolorata, Sant'Agostino, San Nicola da Tolentino, Santa Rita, San Giovanni Battista e San Montano .
  • Birthplace of St. Rita ( Casa natale ), now a museum.
  • Residence of Saint Rita ( Casa Maritale ), contains a painting by Luca Giordano from the 17th century.
  • Lazzaretto , contains frescoes from the 16th century. Two of the original three buildings have survived.
  • Scolglio di Santa Rita (827 m), also called Scoglio di Roccaporena or Sacro Scoglio . The mountain houses a chapel that was built in 1919 and supplemented in 1941. Suffered considerable damage in the 1979 earthquake and was rebuilt in 1983 by the architect Riccardo Leoni.
  • Orto del Miracolo , contains a bronze statue of Santa Rita by Rodolfo Maleci (made in 1941).
  • Grotta d'Oro , rock grotto with a wooden cross.
