Alexander Thomson

history

The building was completed in 1854. As an architect, Alexander Thomson was responsible for the planning. The villa is considered a turning point in his development, as Thomson broke away from the neo-Romanesque style for the first time and used elements of Greek architecture that would become the main elements of his later work. This includes the entrance area, which may no longer be in its original state, but was added later by Thomson. In addition, Thomson separated a villa into two functional elements, a living area and an economic area, for the first time in this building.

description

Rockland has a T-shaped floor plan. The main wing is two-story, while the business wing to the east is only one-story. It consists of gray, carved quarry stone with decorative ribbons of cream-colored square stones from which the window surrounds of the windows and doors are made. The individual parts of the building usually end with gable roofs . The entrance area is limited by a pair of columns that support the balcony above. At the rear there is a sundial, to which the monument protection explicitly extends.
