The Rodovia dos Imigrantes , in German immigrant motorway , official road numbering SP-160 , is a toll motorway in the Brazilian state of São Paulo . The highway is 72 kilometers long and leads from the capital São Paulo to the coastal city of Praia Grande . The motorway comprises 44 viaducts, seven bridges and 17 tunnels, it has three lanes in both directions. It is the most important connection between São Paulo and the Atlantic coast and is one of the busiest motorways in Brazil.

The Rodovia dos Imigrantes is part of a motorway network called " Sistema Anchieta-Imigrantes ", to which the Rodovia Anchieta , Rodovia Padre Manoel da Nóbrega and Rodovia Cônego Domênico Rangoni also belong. The "motorway system" is maintained by the private operator EcoRodovias .

history

The foundation stone for the motorway was laid on January 23, 1974 and two years later the first, northern section of the route opened. The main reason for the construction was the overloading of the parallel Rodovia Anchieta . At that time, the structure was considered an engineering masterpiece due to the 11 tunnels and numerous viaducts to cross the Serra do Mar. Originally, the first opened route was only intended to accommodate traffic to the north, while a second route for traffic to the south was to be built in parallel. However, that did not happen.

On May 27, 1998, the private company Ecovias was granted the concession to operate and maintain the motorway for a period of 20 years. As part of the award conditions, further construction towards the south (to Praia Grande) was stipulated. This line went into operation on December 17, 2002. The southern part has fewer tunnels than the northern part; However, two of the four are among the longest motorway tunnels in Brazil at 3146 meters and 3009 meters respectively .

On September 15, 2011, around 1:00 p.m. UTC − 3 , particularly heavy fog caused a two-kilometer pile -up with 103 vehicles, 29 injured and one dead. Rescuing everyone involved takes a good 24 hours. The accident was one of the worst in the history of the state of São Paulo.

business

The motorway has been tolled since it opened. Numerous users of the motorway complain that the increase in tolls is disproportionately high even when adjusted for inflation. The Rodovia dos Imigrantes tolls are currently the highest in the state of São Paulo at 21.20 reais for a return trip by car. There are four fixed toll booths for collecting the toll: in Piratininga, Batistini, Eldorado and Diadema.

The motorway is designed in such a way that it can only be used in one direction on certain occasions. The operator Ecovias makes this possible especially at the beginning or end of long weekends and school holidays.
