Life

Rohese de Verdon was the only child of the Anglo-Irish nobleman Nicholas de Verdon , a younger son of Bertram de Verdon . After September 4, 1225 she was married to Theobald le Botiller , a son of Theobald fitz Walter and his wife Maud le Vavasour . As the likely heir of her father, Rohesa kept the name de Verdon after the marriage, which her children also received. Her husband died in July 1230 during Henry III's campaign in France. in Poitou . After her father's death in 1231, she inherited his estates in England and Ireland. In Ireland, Rohese is said to have started construction of Castle Roche in County Louth in 1236 . In 1233 she was able to settle the dispute with the de Lacy family , which her father Nicholas de Verdon had started around 1210 over the dowry of his sister Lescelina's marriage to Hugh de Lacy . In 1245 she finally concluded an agreement with Hugh de Lacy. After this he received £ 200 in exchange for giving up half of the Verdon estates in Louth that he claimed. The fiefs that he had previously given to his followers were allowed to keep them, provided they became vassals of Rohese.

After 1235, Rohese founded the Augustinian priory Grace Dieu Priory near Thringstone in Leicestershire . She died in late 1246 or early 1247.
