Crioceris macilenta is a beetle from the family of leaf beetles (Chrysomelidae) and the subfamily of Criocerinae . The genus Crioceris is represented in Europe with seven species , the strongly varying species Crioceris macilenta occurs in the Mediterranean area.

Notes on the name

Crioceris macilenta was first described in 1880 by Weise , who classified the species behind the common asparagus chicken Crioceris asparagi . The German-language description begins with the words smaller and even flatter than the previous type . This explains the species name maciléntus ( lat. Lean). The genus name Crioceris is from Altgr. κριός kriós for "ram" and κέρας kéras for "horn" derived. It refers to the beetle's antennae.

Characteristics of the beetle

Since the specimens of the species, as in the case of the common asparagus, vary greatly, some authors regard Crioceris macilenta as the southern form of the asparagus. With a length of 4.5 to five millimeters, the beetles are smaller than the asparagus chickens, and also flatter. The basic color is earthy black.

The head is wrinkled tightly in front and around the eyes . The forehead and neck are dense and strongly punctured . The temples are moderately arched. The eleven-link antennae are string-shaped and predominantly black. According to the first description, the first antenna element is lighter green, the following three elements darker green, the remaining elements black. The first links can, however, be darker to black, but they are shiny, while the remaining links appear dull due to the hair.

The pronotum is hardly longer than it is wide, its sides almost parallel. It is barely noticeably constricted in front of the base and has a double border at the base. It is dense and clearly dotted. The disc is slightly curved. The pronotum is black, but lined with broad brown all around.

The label is about as long as it is wide and rounded at the back.

The elytra are together significantly wider than the pronotum and head. The sides run approximately parallel, their ends together form approximately a semicircle. The wing covers have longitudinal rows of points. The points are much closer and the rows are sunk deeper and run more regularly than with the asparagus chicken. The basic color of the wing covers is black-brown. The wing covers are edged brown on the outside to the tip. On each wing-cover there are three white longitudinal flaws, one behind the other, which are usually fused to form a wide strip that extends between the third and sixth row of dots, starting at the front and over about three-quarters of the length of the wing-cover. This stripe can be dissolved, but the parts never expand to the seam or to the outer edge of the wing covers. Several authors have described numerous variants of the white drawing, the most important of which are shown in Fig. 4.

The legs are light brown at least at the roots of the thighs and splints, the thighs on the outside ore green to black, the four-limbed tarsi and the outer part of the splint are darkened. The thighs of the hind legs are hardly narrower than in the related species, but the leg is shorter. The claws are not grown together.

biology

The beetle has a stridulation apparatus . The shrill ridges sit on the seventh visible tergite and the wing covers form the shrill surface. The meaning of the sound generation is still unclear, it is assumed that it serves as a deterrent.

The beetles are found on Asparagus aphyllus orientalis and other asparagus species ( Asparagus tenuifolius , Asparagus officinalis , Asparagus setaceus ). In the Balearic Islands they appear from May to June and train two generations a year. The larvae crawl like caterpillars on the host plants and feed on them. The excrement is attached to the abdomen.

distribution

The species is common in the Mediterranean. The Fauna Europaea includes the Balearic Islands, Corsica , France , Gibraltar , Italy , Malta , Monaco , Portugal , Sardinia , Sicily , Spain and North Africa . However, the beetle is more common, it has also been reported from Crete, and the photos accompanying the article are from the Peloponnese .
