Julius Weise (born June 6, 1844 in Sommerfeld , † February 25, 1925 in Herischdorf ) was a German entomologist .

Life

Julius Weise was a Beetle specialist. The use of the genital apparatus of the beetle for the precise identification of externally similar species goes back to him. He devoted himself mainly to the research of the beetle families Chrysomelidae (leaf beetles) and Coccinellidae (ladybirds) and published numerous papers in this area. Many beetles were first described by Weise , including the black ball ladybug ( Stethorus punctillum ) and the mountain bark beetle ( Cryphalus saltuarius ).

His important collection of Chrysomelidae and Coccinellidae, Staphylinidae (short-winged birds) and Carabidae (ground beetles) is now in the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin. The Curculionidae (weevils) and the Scolytidae (bark beetles) are in the Senckenberg Museum in Frankfurt am Main .

In his honor, the ladybird genus Microweisea was named, which today is the type genus of one of the two subfamilies of the ladybirds , the Microweiseinae .
