Roi ( French for "king") is a pop song by Bilal Hassani . He is also responsible for the text, and he composed the music with Madame Monsieur and Medeline. Hassani represented France at the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 with this song .

background

France 2 decided in the summer of 2018 to stick to the format, Destination Eurovision. The first semifinal took place on January 12, 2019, in which Hassani was able to unite the majority of the callers and the jury. Two weeks later at the final, “Roi” was voted fourth by the jury, but won the telephone vote by a clear margin, so that the song won the preliminary round 46 points ahead of the runner-up.

Composition and text

"Roi" has a slow tempo of about 76 beats per minute and is introduced by a piano. It is noticeable that the text very often changes to French and back to English . The first two verses are read in English, the next verse in French, but only with the English word "free". The content is about a person who is outed has. That she is different seems to bother others, but the person is not impressed by it.

Madame Monsieur , who already represented France in the European competition in 2018, are involved in the composition .

reception

Irving Wolther compared the song with the ESC winning title from 2014, " Rise Like a Phoenix " and said it was to be seen whether Roi could withstand this.

The choice of the artist in the preliminary round received international attention after Hassani was attacked on social networks.

As every year, the French entry was automatically qualified for the final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2019. He reached the 16th place there.

publication

The song was released as a single on January 4, 2019.
