Roland Goertz (born September 19, 1969 in Hagen ) is a German chemist and fire department scientist. At the Bergische Universität Wuppertal he is professor for chemical safety and defensive fire protection as well as director of the fire service science institute and chairman of the institute for occupational medicine, safety technology and ergonomics -ASER- e. V.

Life

Goertz was born the son of a tailor and a model carpenter in Hagen and joined the Hagen volunteer fire brigade, Haspe unit, in 1987. After graduating from the mathematics and natural sciences Ernst Meister-Gymnasium in Hagen-Haspe, he began studying chemistry at the Ruhr University in Bochum in the 1989 winter semester. There he graduated from the Chair of Analytical Chemistry in 1994 with a diploma thesis on “LSIMS investigations of cationized oligopeptides with alkali and alkaline earth metals” as a qualified chemist. In 1997 he was awarded a PhD with a thesis on "Analysis and systematisation of organic smoke constituents". rer. nat. PhD.

After the second state examination for the higher technical fire service, he began his professional career with the fire brigade in 1999 as a department head and deputy head of the office for fire protection, rescue service and disaster control of the state capital Erfurt, which he took over in 2004. On April 26, 2002 he was at the school rampage in Erfurt , within the special organizational structure of the police, operations manager for the rescue service and the fire department.

In 2007 Goertz became head of the fire department in Karlsruhe. On March 11, 2009, he was on site in Winnenden as a consultant for the operations management team at the school rampage at the Albertville secondary school.

In 2012 he was appointed university professor at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal, where he heads the chair for chemical safety and fire protection.

In 2018 Goertz became director of the newly founded Fire Brigade Science Institute, which, as a scientific institution in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Safety Technology of the Bergische Universität Wuppertal, pursues research and knowledge transfer in the field of scientific, technical and organizational aspects of fire brigades and non-police hazard prevention.

At the beginning of 2019, the North Rhine-Westphalian Justice Minister Peter Biesenbach (CDU) appointed him to the expert commission to improve the penal system in North Rhine-Westphalia, which was supposed to review fire protection, communication and the handling of mentally ill people.

In 2019 Goertz took over the chairmanship of the Institute for Occupational Medicine, Safety Technology and Ergonomics -ASER- e. V., an affiliated institute of the Bergische Universität, which carries out basic and application-oriented research and development projects in the fields of occupational medicine, safety technology, ergonomics, occupational psychology and relevant related areas, as well as implementing new findings and advising state and non-state institutions in the research field tracked.

In 2019 he was elected honorary head of the Bad Herrenalb volunteer fire department.
