Karl Wilhelm Bardou
Karl Wilhelm Bardou (born August 5, 1774 in Berlin ; † 1842 ) was a portrait painter from Berlin who also worked in Russia.
Bardou came from a family of artists. He was the son of the sculptor Emanuel Bardou and nephew of the portrait painter Paul Joseph Bardou , whose pupil he became.
He exhibited his works in Berlin in 1797 and in 1836, 1838, 1839 and 1842.
He spent the period from 1804 to 1827 as a portrait painter in Russia. He accepted Russian citizenship. He worked in Saint Petersburg , Moscow and Kazan . In Russia there are currently around 160 portraits in state and private art collections.
He married the Russian, Anna Ivanovna (1786–1840) who died in Darmstadt after an illness . The couple had three children: Alexander (* 1810), Andreas (* 1818) and Sophie (* 1817).
He should not be confused with the portrait painter Johann P. Bardou, who also worked in Russia .
