He was the younger brother of the sculptor Emanuel Bardou (1744-1818) and the uncle of the portraitist Karl Wilhelm Bardou (* 1744). He attended the Collége Français in Berlin , studied from 1756 at the Berlin Academy of Arts with Blaise Nicolas Le Sueur . In 1804 he became a member of the Prussian Academy of Arts , which cemented his position as a creator. He died in Berlin in 1814.

As early as 1806, Johann Heinrich Füssli confused him with the portrait painter Johann P. Bardou, who was active in Warsaw and St. Petersburg .
