Roland Schenkel

Roland Schenkel (born August 6, 1947 in Rastatt ) is a German atomic physicist and science manager who was Director General of the Joint Research Center of the European Union .

Life

Roland Schenkel grew up in Bietigheim, Baden, as the son of a beverage dealer. From 1968 to 1973 he studied physics and radiochemistry at the University of Karlsruhe and moved to the University of Saarbrücken , where he received his doctorate in 1976 with a thesis on the phenomena of electrical conductivity of americium and curium . After a research stay at the Center d'Etude Nuclèaires Grenoble in Grenoble (1976/77) and two years at the Karlsruhe reprocessing plant , he moved to EURATOM in 1979 . From 1994 to 2002 he then held a leading position at the Institute for Transuranium Elements (ITU) in Karlsruhe, most recently as its director. He was then initially appointed Deputy Director General of the Joint Research Center. From 2004 to 2010 he was its general director.
