Life

Rolf Monzel was born in 1958 in Wuppertal, the son of an artist. After training as a biology laboratory assistant, Rolf Monzel completed a technical degree. In 2003 he started as a professional artist. He laid the foundations for this at the Martin Lutz-van Berkel watercolor school and then with Wolf Wrisch at the Rhodt Academy.

Chalk and watercolor painting form the basis of the works. Rolf Monzel mainly uses strong to bright colors that are reminiscent of an expressionist style and pop art. In the most diverse application techniques from brush, spray to spatula techniques, his works vary from more concrete to abstract representations. Rolf Monzel used the peculiarities of the watercolor to blur the boundaries to other paint applications such as oil, acrylic and gouache. In more recent works, Rolf Monzel uses watercolors as well as various other techniques that have been combined with one another. As a result of this new style composition, it generates unusual visual effects. Rolf Monzel tried to redevelop the combination of styles, colors and application techniques for each of his themes and in some cases for individual works and motifs. It is therefore not possible to categorize the artist into a specific style.

Many of the works cite private and collective memories. In addition to individual topics, political conflicts of interest and current circumstances flow into Monzel's work.
