Roman Juschkow is a lecturer at Perm State University . In 1996 he founded the »Green Ecumenism« there. Citizens take action against air and water pollution. He is also the editor of the newspaper of the Perm Human Rights Chamber . For years he has been concerned about the interethnic understanding between Russians and Chechens, Orthodox Christians and oriental Muslims who have settled in Perm. A toxic waste dump near Perm was prevented by its activities, the destruction of nuclear warheads in the vicinity of the city was at least postponed until there was no danger to the population. The village (Pavlovo) seemed to be at the mercy of the environmental damage caused by the Lukoil corporation without any rights, until Juschkow and the local residents fought for their rights. When he wanted to take part in a meeting about the future of the Gaiwaer Heide , which is being built illegally with the approval of the state authorities, Yuschkow was arrested in June 2006, detained for 48 hours and charged with holding an unauthorized meeting of wanting accused.
