Roman Kaiser (born July 15, 1945 in Kirchberg SG ) is a Swiss fragrance chemist . Since 1968 he has been employed by Givaudan , the world's largest manufacturer of fragrances and flavors , where he uses the so-called headspace technique to analyze natural fragrances and reconstruct them for use in perfumes .

Life

After studying chemistry at the Technikum Winterthur , he joined Givaudan's research center in Dübendorf in 1968 and has been working as a fragrance chemist in this company ever since. The focus of his work is the study and perfumery reconstitution of natural scents as well as the search for and synthesis of new fragrances isolated from nature . Since 1975 he has been using the headspace technique, which leaves the plant and its flowers intact by examining the sample space above by gas chromatography . He is considered to be one of the pioneers of this methodology and many of the natural accords he reconstituted have found use in internationally known fragrances. In recognition of his extensive scientific work, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the ETH Zurich in November 1995 . Lately he has been increasingly interested in the flora found in the canopy and undergrowth of tropical rainforests and especially in the reconstitution of fragrances of endangered plant species.

The results of his investigations are documented in many original articles in specialist journals and in three books so far:
