Romica Puceanu (* 1926 in Bucharest ; † November 1996 in Bucharest) was a Roma singer from Romania. She is known as the “grande dame of the Cantece de mahala”.

life and work

Romica Puceanu was born in Bucharest in 1926. At the age of 14 she started singing in the local cafes in Floreasca and in the Herestrau district on the outskirts of Bucharest. It was her cousins ​​Aurel and Victor Gore (known as Taraful Fratii Gore), who also made music, who discovered her and helped her upstairs. With Taraful Fratii Gore she recorded her first album in 1964.
