Romulo Cincinato

La circuncisión (German: The Circumcision ) from 1573, originally for a Jesuit church altar in Cuenca, is kept in the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando .

Rómulo Cincinato (* 1502 (?) In Florence , † 1593 in Madrid ) was an Italian Renaissance painter of Mannerism who worked in Spain.

Cincinato was a follower of the Florentine Francesco Salviati and was brought to the Spanish court of Philip II in 1557 by Luis de Zúñiga y Requesens , at the time the Spanish ambassador to the Holy See . In Spain he worked for the crown at the Real Sitio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial , for the Roman Catholic Church and between 1578 and 1580 for the influential Castilian noble family de Mendoza (in the Palacio del Infantado , Guadalajara ).

His two sons, Diego Rómulo Cincinato and Francisco, also became painters. Diego painted a. a. for Fernando Afán de Ribera , the third Duke of Alcalá.
