The Ronald shrew pouch rat ( Monodelphis ronaldi ) is a species of opossum of which only the holotype is known. It was caught in the Manú National Park on the left bank of the Río Madre de Dios in southeastern Peru and described as an independent species in 2004 by the Colombian mammalogen Sergio Solari and named in honor of the US zoologist Ronald H. Pine .

description

The holotype has a head body length of 14.1 cm, has a 7.2 cm long tail and weighed 70 g. The tail is only half as long as the head and torso combined. The top of the head and back are monochrome brown to sepia colored . There is no dark median stripe on the back, dark circles under the eyes or reddish or yellowish tones on the sides of the body. The peritoneum is cream-colored. The fur is velvety, the hair length is 3 to 4 mm. The paws are light reddish to silver-gray. The tail is only hairy on the first mm near the body. It is gray-brown on the top and whitish on the underside. Like all shrew pouch rats, females are unlikely to have a pouch. The number of teats is not known. The holotype is a male.

Way of life

The holotype was caught at a height of 356 meters in a damp mixed forest with thickets of reed beds . So far nothing is known about the way of life, behavior, diet, activity patterns and reproduction of the animals.

status

The only known specimen of the Ronald shrew pouch rat was caught in a protected area, the Manú National Park in Peru. It is believed that the range of the species has a much larger extent. The IUCN estimates the population of the Ronald Shrew Pouch Rat as Least Concern.
