Since 2003 he has been emeritus of this university. From 1997 to 1999 he was President of the International Cognitive Linguistics Association .

Langacker is the founder of cognitive grammar and one of the most important thought leaders in cognitive linguistics . In his two-volume main work Foundations of Cognitive Grammar (1987, 1991), which is considered the standard work in cognitive linguistics, he describes the general principles of this theory. Similar to the representatives of construction grammar , Langacker assumes that human languages, including their grammars, are inherently symbolic in nature, that is, they consist of phonological and semantic units as well as links between them. Langacker also assumes that linguistic structures are motivated by general cognitive processes; When formulating his theory, he often uses the principles of Gestalt psychology , especially visual perception.
