Appearance

With a height of about 20 to 23 centimeters, the Roraima screech owl is a small to medium-sized species within its genus. It is very similar to the Guatemala screech owl and the scribble screech owl , to which it corresponds in body size. However, it has a significantly darker plumage and is largely spotted on the underside of the body. The back of the body appears striated, as the feathers here have large, elongated light spots at the end. The spring ears are relatively short. The eyes are yellow.

In addition to the Guatemala and the scribble screech owl, the Roraima screech owl can also be confused with a subspecies of the Choliba screech owl . However, this has a noticeable dark border around the face veil , which is missing in the Roraima screech owl.

distribution and habitat

The distribution area of the Roraima screech owl are mountain regions in Venezuela and the bordering Brazil. It is a resident bird that inhabits the rainforests on the mountain slopes. The height distribution ranges from about 1,000 to 1,800 meters above sea level.

Way of life

The Roraima screech owl resembles other screech owls in their way of life. It is presumably an exclusively nocturnal species of owl whose food spectrum consists mainly of insects. It is also likely to beat small vertebrates. It breeds in tree hollows. Otherwise nothing is known about their way of life.
