Rosa Schreiber-Freissmuth
Rosa Schreiber-Freissmuth (* 1913 in Graz ; † 1996 ) was an Austrian pharmacist who was posthumously named Righteous Among the Nations in 1997 for rescuing Jews from a labor camp in Burgenland .
Life
Rosa Schreiber-Freissmuth, at that time still Rosa Schreiber, was the owner of a pharmacy in Neuhaus am Klausenbach in the Austrian Burgenland. There was a "labor camp" near Neuhaus. She saved the life of the adolescent Alan Brown and, first of all, that of his father, both of whom had typhoid , by providing them with medication and food. She also saved the lives of other forced laborers in the camp.
Alan Brown, then 16 years old, was "transferred" to Neuhaus in December 1943. In Neuhaus, the forced laborers had to dig trenches to defend against the Soviet troops. Brown and his father contracted typhus in February 1945. Alan Brown snuck out of the camp to the neighboring town of Neuhaus that night and asked for medication in Schreiber's pharmacy. Until the end of the war, Rosa Schreiber provided Brown and his father with medication and food. Alan Brown's father died the day after the liberation by Soviet troops.
Alan Brown later emigrated to the USA and Canada and became a professor of economics . He was the only survivor in his family. After a total of 16 years of searching, he finally found Rosa Schreiber and achieved her award as Righteous Among the Nations .
