from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Roskilde 6 is the wreck of a Viking longship that was found in the Roskildefjord during the excavation work for the expansion of the Viking Ship Museum Roskilde in 1996/1997 .

The ship

It is the largest Viking ship found so far, with a length of around 36 meters. The width is reconstructed to three and a half meters and the draft to about one meter. The square sail on the only mast is estimated to be 200 square meters. The crew will have been about 100 men, with 78 rowing places. As is usual with warships of this size, the hull of Roskilde 6 is intricately crafted from oak. The ship is dated to the time after 1025.
