Ross is an impact crater on the front of the moon in the plain of Mare Tranquillitatis , southwest of Pliny crater and northeast of Sosigenes .

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the English explorer James Clark Ross and the American astronomer and physicist Frank Elmore Ross .
