Rossmore Castle ( Irish Caisleán Ros Mór ), now Rossmore Park , was a castle southwest of the city of Monaghan in County Monaghan, Ireland . The 19th century building was demolished in the 1970s.

history

Warner Westenra, 2nd Baron Rossmore , had the castle built in the neo-Gothic style in 1827 ; In 1858 it was expanded by architect William Harry Lynn . Lord Rossmore and the Shirleys of Lough Fea had fought for many years over the title of owner of the largest room in County Monaghan; the salon at Rossmore Castle was therefore enlarged five times. The castle ended up having at least 117 windows in 53 different sizes.

After the Second World War , brown rot was found at the castle , which made it necessary to demolish the building. This took place in 1974; today there are only a few parts of the wall overgrown with ivy .
