The Rostock Light Week goes back to the light days of 1928. With the help of the light days, companies presented the benefits people have from electricity in everyday life. This event was finally set up in cooperation between students and the Rostock public utility in the form of the Rostock Light Week.

Sustainability and environmental protection

Environmental protection also plays a role at the event: in 2011, mainly LED light sources were used for the first time to save energy. In 2014 the complete switch to LED lighting took place. To avoid waste, reusable cups were used for the event in 2019 at the request of the citizens.

Technology and installations

In 2011, according to the public utility board member Oliver Brünnich, roughly the annual energy consumption of a single-family house was required for the light week. In 2014 it was a little less than 5,000 kilowatt hours of electricity, which roughly corresponds to the annual energy consumption of an average four-person household. Around 1,200 kilometers of cables were laid here and around 400 light points were installed.

In 2014, a so-called pixel mapping show took place in the Rostock region for the first time . For this purpose, photos of the baroque hall were first created and then processed with image programs. At the opening of the event, two- and three-dimensional shapes were finally projected onto the facade.

In 2019, five-meter-high inflatable installations were also set up, which were illuminated by LED spotlights.

The entire income from drinks sales during the Rostock Light Week will be donated to non-profit associations in the region. For this purpose, socially, culturally or athletically committed clubs can apply for a donation from the organizer.

Furthermore, visitors can take part in lantern parades, historical city tours, as well as photo workshops and a photo competition. In 2015 there was also a so-called star march for the first time, during which torches were to be brought to the University Square from different directions in order to metaphorically bring the light of day to the city of Rostock.

In 2011, on the occasion of the ten-year anniversary, postcards and a special newspaper limited to 10,000 copies were produced and distributed by newspaper boys in historical clothing during the event.
