Red Cossacks were among the first groups to fight armed as the “Ukrainian Soviet Army” for the Soviet councils in Ukraine. The proclaimed Soviet power was to lead the struggle with the aim of expanding the Bolsheviks from the founding place of Kharkiv and the regions of Kiev , Poltava and Chernihiv . The Bolsheviks' goal was to control Ukraine because of its resources and geopolitical location. A well-known unit was the corps under the command of Vitaly Primakov in the Ukrainian-Soviet war and in the fight against the anarchist republic of Machnovshchina .
