The red column on the Berger coat of arms

The Red Column ( Low German De Rohen Sulen ) is a border marker in the form of a red wooden post between the Berger districts of Anten and Börstel and the Menslager district of Hahlen .

After the Hahlener dug a border trench through the Hahlener Moor , which the Antener did not recognize, disputes arose between the places. The Antener then relocated the border ditch according to their ideas. The border ditch between the towns of Hahlen and Anten was laid several times until a fight broke out between the warring parties. An Antener farmer was fatally injured. In the subsequent process in Osnabrück , the course of the border was determined and the red column was erected as a border marker in June 1750.

According to a legend, a Napoleon's soldier drowned here in the Hahlener Moor between 1811 and 1813.

The Red Column was erected in 1750 due to ongoing border disputes between the residents of Anten and Menslage. The stake was renewed in the 1930s and around 1960.

After the incorporation of Anten and Börstel into Berge, the red column was added to the municipal coat of arms of Berge.
