List of apple varieties |
Red astrakhan , also red August apple , red Jakobiapfel or harvest apple , is a very early variety of the cultivated apple .
origin
This variety originated in Russia, probably in the Volga region, and was first described in 1780. It reached England via Scandinavia around 1816 and from there to Germany around 1840, where Johann Georg Dittrich first described it in German.
fruit
The fruits that ripen in early to mid-August can only be kept for two to three weeks. The small to medium-sized, spherical fruits have a light yellow base color and a light red to dark red covering color. The shell is bluish frosted and covered with many, mostly clearly visible lenticels . The flesh is yellowish white (often red directly under the skin), juicy and pleasantly sour, but overripe fruits are already floury.
tree
Initially the growth is strong, later becoming weaker. The tree forms a medium-sized, spherical crown. The demands on soil and climate are low, so this variety can also be grown in rough locations. The flowering is early to medium early and a good pollen donor. The tree is susceptible to scab, cancer and drought.
