The Red House is the landmark of the Austrian city of Dornbirn . Standing on the Dornbirn market square next to the parish church of St. Martin , the wooden building, built in the style of a Rhine Valley house , was erected in 1639 and is one of the city's sights today.

The building is located in the city center, directly southwest of the market square and next to the parish church, in the Markt district. In 1639 Michael Danner and his wife Verena, née Rhomberg, built the stately Rheintalhaus and used it as a residence, an inn and a dance venue. The Red House is still run as an inn today. Subsequently, the building on the market square developed into a center of Dornbirn's community politics. The open staircase in front of the Red House was often used for official announcements and the most important event in the early modern history of Dornbirn - the ransom from the Counts of Ems in 1771, through which the Dornbirn people were freed from Ems rule - took place in the Red House.

Fir and lion, the Danner-Rhomberg coat of arms, still adorn the main front gable today.

In 1954, August Rhomberg and his wife, the architect Elfriede Rhomberg, saved the Red House from certain decay and the intended demolition by the city, who bought the house and renovated it both inside and out at great expense. Thus the oldest Rhine Valley house in the city was preserved and later named the city's landmark. In the middle of 2007, the restaurant in the building was extensively restored.

The architecturally rich structure of the red house, which deliberately refrains from symmetry, brightly colored painting (real bull's blood has no longer been used to color the walls in their eponymous color since early modern times ), hand-hewn beams, antique household items and real stoves, which is also used Local history and handicraft antiques are located, make up the building today.
