Prophet Master

As prophets master or sometimes master of prophets from Rottweiler chapel tower is medieval sculptor called that in 1350 the figure cycle of prophets with Maria from the tower of the chapel church in Rottweil has created. He is sometimes referred to as the Rottweiler Marienmeister .

The chapel tower, built around 1300 and mentioned for the first time in 1313, is considered to be an important Gothic church tower and its sandstone jewelry is an important example of Gothic monumental sculpture in the Swabian region . The cycle of prophets with Mary from the south side of the tower is programmatically related to the almost simultaneous cycle of the apostles of the New Testament with Christ from the west side of the tower. The cycle of the apostles was created by another sculptor , also unknown by name and referred to as the master of the apostles .

The figures of the prophets with Mary and those of the apostles with Christ were removed between 1891 and 1907 and are still exhibited in the art collection Lorenzkapelle Rottweil. Together with the collection of other sculptures in the chapel church, they are seen there as an example of the great Rottweiler stone carving art of the 14th century from the Rottweiler Bauhütte and sandstone sculpture with an almost independent Rottweiler style .

The prophet master is influenced by the Gothic sculpture of France and seems to know the work of other building works such as Strasbourg and Freiburg im Breisgau . His style can also be found in the region, for example in Augsburg . However, whether works on the Augsburg Cathedral that are stylistically close to the Prophet Master and his Rottweiler style were perhaps even created by the master himself as an employee in Augsburg or whether the building works in Augsburg was an offshoot of Rottweil in his time , was discussed in contradictory circles; it could also be that the influence went in the opposite direction and that Rottweil received his impulses from Augsburg for the important sculptures from around 1350. In any case, the Prophet Master was a leading master in Rottweil and developed the style there forwards, possibly after a short stay in Augsburg.
