Roughing the passer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Roughing the Passer ( English rough treatment of the appropriate imaging Player ) is an offense in American football and Canadian football , in which the right giving players (usually the quarterback ) after pass by a defender getacklet is. Breaking the rules is punished with a 15- yard penalty in the National Football League , and with a ten-yard penalty in other leagues. There is also an automatic first down .

In American football, it is allowed to tackle the player who is passing if he is still in possession of the game device (referred to as a sack ). However, if the ball is thrown forward, i.e. no longer in the possession of the passer, the roughing-the-passer penalty is pronounced by the referees .

This penalty can also apply if the passer-by is approached with excessive severity.

Tackling the passer during backward passes ( lateral pass ) or after picking up the ball after a fumble is not penalized .

In the NFL, this rule was implemented to better protect quarterbacks. However, after a severe tightening for the 2018 season, it is very much criticized.

In the Canadian Football League , the penalty can be 25 yards since the 2019 season if the roughing is done with the helmet against the head and neck area and the fouling player had an undisturbed view and no mitigating circumstances - such as ducking the head the quarterback - are present.
