Rowrah is a place in Cumbria in the north west of England.

In his heyday at the beginning of the 20th century, 4 limestone quarries were operated on the territory of the municipality and 4 railway lines from 3 railway companies were connected to Rowrah .

The 4 quarries were:

  • Stockhow Hall Quarry; Closed in 1909.
  • Salter Hall Quarry; Shut down in 1927.
  • Kelton Head Quarry; Shut down in 1950.
  • Rowrah Head Quarry; shut down in the 1980s.

The Whitehaven, Cleator and Egremont Railway operated two railway lines. A connection led from Rowrah to the rail link between Cockermouth and Workington and there was a connection to Whitehaven . The company operated the connection to Whitehaven with a train station in Rowrah from 1864. From 1866 there was the connection to the Cockermouth and Workington Railway , which was discontinued in 1964.

The Rowrah and Kelton Fell Railway transported iron ore and limestone from 3.5 miles (5.6 km) away from Kelton Fell to Rowrah from 1877 to 1927 . The line was dismantled in 1934.

The Cleator and Workington Junction Railway operated from 1888 a connection to the places Cleator Moor , Workington and Distington and their steelworks. The railway line was originally only used to transport goods, but until 1931 there was also passenger service from Rowrah station . The station itself was not closed until 1967.

The route network around Rowrah was so extensive that it got its own signal box in 1875.

Limestone from Rowrah was transported via a rail link to Whitehaven until 1978. The line was then dismantled.

The Colliergate Beck one of the headwaters of the River Marron arises on the eastern outskirts of Rowrah.
