The Cleator and Workington Junction Railway was founded in 1876 by a resolution of the British Parliament and began operating in 1879.

The railway company operated a railway line between Cleator Moor and Workington in Cumbria .

The main task of the company was the transport of coal and iron ore for the steel works in Workington as well as the transport of limestone . The railway line also had passenger stations in the places along its route. The company's headquarters were in Central Square in Workington and the company's train station there was therefore called Workington (Central) . The company also operated various smaller sections to connect to the Cumbrian Coast Line and the Cockermouth and Workington Railway and a branch line to Rowrah with a connection to the Rowrah and Kelton Fell Railway . The last section of the Cleator and Workington Junction Railway , which served a naval ammunition depot in the parish of Broughton , was closed in 1992.
