The Roxbury Russet is a very old variety of the cultivated apple .
It is considered the oldest apple variety in the United States, as it was discovered in a tree garden in Roxbury (a village that is now part of Boston ) as early as 1645 . It is a Renette with a gray-green skin, known for its long shelf life and suitable for cider . Today it is rarely planted.
