Royal Natal National Park

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Royal Natal National Park was formed in 1916 in the Drakensberg Mountains in South Africa in what is now KwaZulu-Natal Province . It is part of the Ukhahlamba-Drakensberg Park , which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site . It is one of the most spectacular natural sights in Africa. The amphitheater is impressive , a rock face several kilometers long and around 1000 meters high between Sentinel (3165 m) and Eastern Buttress (3047 m). On the flat summit plateau there are some mountains such as the Mont-Aux-Sources ( Sesotho : Phofung ) (3282 m), which the French missionaries Thomas Arbousset and François Daumas climbed in 1836 and named after the sources of three larger rivers.

One of these, the Tugela , plunges 948 meters into the Tugela Falls in five stages (other information: almost 3000 feet, 540 m). In cold winters it freezes in the upper steps and forms impressive pillars of ice.

The Royal Natal National Park is ideal for hiking with a network of classified trails for all skill levels; This ranges from the easy ascent of Mont-aux-Sources from the plateau to the annual Mont-aux-Sources Challenge, when cross-country runners come together to complete the 50-kilometer route in less than five hours.
