Rozelle House

Rozelle House is a manor house in the Scottish town of Ayr in the Council Area South Ayrshire . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish Monuments List in the highest category A. Furthermore, together with the Rozelle Lodge , it forms a category B monument ensemble.

history

The lands were owned by Burgh Ayr for centuries . Only in 1754 did the city feel compelled to sell to reduce its debt level. The businessman Robert Hamilton , made his fortune with the sugar and tobacco trade to the West Indies had made, acquired the land at a price of £ 2000. In the same year, Hamilton had the construction of Rozelle House begin. The building, completed in 1760, was named Rozelle after Rochelle , the family estate in Jamaica .

Between 1829 and 1831 Rozelle House was redesigned by Scottish architect David Bryce . The property was family-owned until November 15, 1968 when John Hamilton donated it to the City of Ayr. Before that, the family had already got into financial difficulties and had to sell parts of the land. The city uses Rozelle House for cultural purposes. The manor houses the Ayrshire Yeomanry Museum and the Maclaurin Galleries in the former stables .

The corps de logis of the Palladian manor house has two floors. The entrance area emerges in the middle. It is reached via a short front staircase and is designed with cornices and blind pillars . Single-storey curved wings extend from this part of the building on both sides, each describing a quarter circle. They connect the main wing with the pavilions in front . The right pavilion is three axes wide and designed with a central entrance door. The stables used to be housed in the left pavilion. A cornice crowns the doorway to the inner courtyard. The doorway is made with a segmented arch with a keystone .
