The name of the street soot comes from Russian and refers to a very old Russian merchant's house and a Russian church. The name Mönchsstraße was also used in German . This name goes back to the St. Katharinen Monastery north of the Katharinengang on the east side of the street . The Catholic St. Peter and Paul Church has also been located there since 1844 . The church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, located at number 24, dates back to the 15th century .
