The Katharinengang ( Estonian Katariina käik ) is a street in the Estonian capital Tallinn ( German  Reval ).

location

It is located in the historic old town of Reval and connects Russstrasse (Estonian: Vene ) in the west with Mauerstrasse ( Müürivahe ) in the east. The Katharinengang runs along the south side of the Sankt-Katharinen-Kloster .

Architecture and history

The cross struts that span the alley are distinctive. They originally served to stabilize the houses on the sides that protruded into the alley. Most of the houses preserved there today date from the 15th to 17th centuries. Due to its location directly on the south wall of the Sankt Katharinen monastery, the name Mönchspassage was also used for the street in the past . Several grave slabs for citizens of Reval from the 14th and 15th centuries are attached to the wall of the monastery.

Due to its historical appearance, the alley has repeatedly served as a film set. The Katharinengang is a popular place for tourists. Several shops house souvenir and artisan shops.
