Rua Gonçalo de Carvalho
The Rua Gonçalo de Carvalho is a 500 meter long avenue in the district of Independencia of Porto Alegre in Brazil. It is famous for its over one hundred native Tipuana trees, whose treetops touch each other and thus give the impression of a green tunnel or a green roof. The view from above is particularly impressive and well-known, as the avenue in these pictures draws a green swath through an otherwise metropolitan high-rise landscape. The trees were planted in the 1930s by workers from a brewery located there at the time. The avenue is named after a Portuguese Dominican .
In the new millennium there were efforts by city planners to cut down some of the trees in order to make space for a shopping center, which a citizens' initiative prevented. In 2006, the then mayor, José Fogaça , declared Rua Gonçalo de Carvalho to be part of the city's cultural heritage.
