Rudolf Běhounek (born February 4, 1902 in Pitkovice ; † August 2, 1974 ) was a Czech geophysicist .

Behounek studied from 1920 at the mining academy in Příbram , where he received his doctorate in 1931 (measurement errors in the mining industry). From 1933 he was at the State Geological Institute in Prague, where he dealt with geophysics, especially geomagnetism (he operated a geomagnetic measuring station in the Pruhonice Wildlife Park near Prague). He also dealt with seismics, geoelectrics and gravity measurements, mostly under application-oriented aspects, for example the search for ore deposits or geoelectrics for soil investigation when dam construction.

From 1936 to 1938 he geomagnetically mapped large parts of Czechoslovakia.

Under German occupation he worked in the then Prague branch of the Reich Office for Soil Research and after the war he headed the geophysical department of the State Geological Institute. In 1946 he completed his habilitation at the Bergakademie on geoelectrics and taught there.

In 1954 he became professor for applied geophysics at the Charles University in Prague . In 1968 he retired for health and age reasons and retired in 1970.
